We worked on a number of exciting projects with Compaq, both in Australia and in Asia. The projects we have worked on include:

Compaq Australia - Employee Orientation.

With the merger of Compaq, Digital and Tandem, our client required a new Orientation Training Module. The module needed to reflect the new company's vision and goals, as well as to introduce staff to the senior management team. Using the latest Macromedia Intranet technology, we produced a web based training module that is updateable and accessible from any site in the company.

Our Brief:

  • introduce the new merged company - with big changes occurring, it was necessary to form a clear communication from senior management as to the direction the newly integrated company would take. This involved covering the company's new vision and mission statements and an interactive Question and Answer session with Ian Penman, Compaq Australia's Managing Director.
  • updateable - as time passes, things change. People leave and join the company. Compaq did not want to have to update the training module every time a senior manager changed, so we were required to store all information about senior management externally to the module. This made it easy to change and lowered maintenance costs.
  • presentation style- Compaq wanted a highly professional presentational look to their training module. We developed a clean, crisp, modern look to reflect the Compaq image.
  • intranet - Compaq wanted to deliver this training over their Intranet. As the training module required the use of a web player, we were also required to set up an internal distribution system for the web player.

Interesting Bits:

  • working with the Balmers, Sue and Rob - it's not often that we work with a husband and wife team.
  • working with Frank and Tudor - the most pleasant & accommodating IT professionals in the industry. Nothing was too much trouble. Thanks guys!
  • the Compaq organisation from a customer's view - we tried a new approach here in having a "composite" customer present each of the Compaq departments to employees - 17 business divisions in 9 minutes!
  • extracting the organisation's interesting facts and achievements - our project team worked constantly with Sue Balmer to extract the wonderful achievements of each department within the company.

Compaq Asia Pacific: Compaq's New Incentive Plan.

Compaq Singapore asked us to produce a communication module
that would promote and advise sales executives about their new sales incentive plan. Compaq wanted to take an innovative approach, using a multimedia CD-based presentation at a big Asia Pacific sales conference and, after the conference, make the presentation available on Compaq's Intranet.

Our Brief:

  • make the presentation quick and compelling. The presentation opens with a series of rapidly changing images reflecting the business and culture of Compaq Asia Pacific. Up-beat music plays in the background while the presentation opens. The entire presentation is narrated and takes about 7 or 8 minutes and users can jump around in the presentation to the areas of most interest to them.
  • explain the important points about the plan without getting too detailed. The full sales incentive plan had quite a lot of detail, but the presentation needed to focus on just the key points and benefits making them clear and easy to follow. In 7 or 8 minutes, sales executives learn key points about the new plan, how it works, how they'll benefit, how to participate and where to find more information.
  • include audio testimonials from division and business unit managers. We needed to record comments about the incentive plan from business unit managers located in Sydney, Melbourne, Malaysia, Bali, Houston, China and Singapore without flying around the world to do it! Special recording equipment enabled us to record everyone over the telephone. Sales executives access the presentation via the Intranet and can hear what their managers think of the plan.
  • make the presentation viewable on CD-ROM and Compaq's Intranet.Compaq wanted the presentation on CD-ROM to show at an upcoming sales conference in Asia and later wanted it accessible from their Intranet for all sales executives to view in their own time and at their own pace.

Interesting Bits:

  • working with John Higgins.John is based in Compaq Singapore. We had one or two meetings with him in Sydney and the rest of the time we communicated very effectively via telephone and email.
  • recording managers located in 7 different cities across the globe in one afternoon! We were able to record managers in different cities, different time zones using special equipment that enables high quality recordings across the telephone. In the presentation, sales executives get to hear from 8 different managers and what they think of the new plan.
  • cultural issues -the presentation had to be designed to appeal to sales executives in the variety of cultures represented across the Asia Pacific.

Compaq Australia - HR Inline: the HR Intranet site.

Compaq wanted to really "launch" their new HR Intranet site, "HR Inline"
and wanted to make a bit of a splash in doing so by hiring The Learning Group to design and build a part fun/part educational presentation, with a few questions at the end... To this end, they developed a contest in which they randomly drew a name for an exotic resort holiday!

Our Brief:

  • pre/post prize - because the contest expired at a certain date, the module had to "act" differently before and after the prize..
  • show off some of the HR Inline site - This wasn't to be a simple presentation -- it had to present the benefits of the HR site, and simulate how easy it is to get around...
  • make it flashy, but educational - we were asked to combine a bit of ritzy presentation with some serious learning -- so we utilised Macromedia Flash for the fun bits and Macromedia Authorware for the serious stuff.
  • intranet - Compaq wanted to deliver this presentation module over their Intranet, as well as CD...

Interesting Bits:

  • working with the Dion - as always, what a treat! She worked tirelessly with us to get the casual feel of the interface just right
