Improvisation Onstage
“A brilliant mind in panic is a wonderful thing to see”, says Carl Reiner, and that’s exactly what the Sunday night audience at Sydney’s Belvoir Theatre revels in as they stamp, clap and cheer the players through the 20th Anniversary season of the THEATRESPORTS® CRANSTON CUP. And our own Scott Hall-Watson is a larger-than-life part of the on-stage action in this year's season, titled with a Viking theme -- "IMPROLANDIA!".
Scott’s team, “Who wants to be a princess?”, is solidly in the running for the biggest - and ugliest! - trophy in existence, the magnificently kitsch Cranston Cup. In round two, Sunday 28th September, supporters from The Learning Group agreed that Scott was clearly a force to be reckoned with -- turning panic into comedy in the blink of an eye. The judges agreed, giving Scott’s team the “Moment of the Match” award, for their efforts in using an eggbeater to motor a melting iceberg back to Antarctica.
A Sydney comedy institution, the Cranston Cup season is an annual cut-throat competition between teams of comic actors. Set the task of creating instant scenes, poems, songs and even operas with absolutely no preparation time, every show is 'on the edge'.
There's lots of audience participation and teams are scored by experienced Theatresports veteran judges and the occasional celebrity. The best of the best will face off at the Enmore Theatre Grand final (always a sell-out) on Saturday 29th November. Our guess is that Scott will be there!
